One of our customers has made an unusual request. They have requested that we introduce biometric authentication for any remote workers who would have access to their data.

At the moment we have a two-factor authentication system (RSA SecurID tokens), and remote users connect via a virtual desktop (Citrix Access Gateway). Traditional biometric readers won't work in this scenario, since they will only control access to the local device and won't add any additional security to the virtual desktop environment.

We have found a solution by a company called Privaris, which combines a fingerprint reader with a SecurID token. The result of this is that it will work seamlessly with our existing virtual desktop solution - i.e., no impact whatsoever on access to the remote PC, but biometric authentication would be needed to access the virtual desktop, as the usual 6-digit token will only be displayed after the correct fingerprint is matched.

My challenge is that at the present time, only one customer has asked for this and the solution is not cheap. I also believe that the marginal reduction in risk provided by the use of biometric tokens means the effort cannot be justified - I believe there would be far greater benefit in spending the money on alternative awareness campaigns.

To help close off the matter, I'm interested in finding out the extent to which biometric authentication is used in other companies for controlling remote access - specifically in context of financial services companies - and how this might be further split between banks and insurance companies?

There doesn't seem to be much choice if you have an investments team. You can't take their phones away and how do you stop them giving out their personal mobile number? You will need a clear policy and awareness program to ensure the message is driven home. Bit early, but is there any best practice yet?

The option to use the same password for every application and service is clearly a poor choice leading to disastrous outcomes. The option to have multiple secure passwords and lock them in a secure folder may seem like a good idea to some, but again once breached the results would be unthinkable,
